As an Eerie, PA Mazda dealer who shares the roads with you, we can tell you that now is the time to brush up on your winter driving skills. In a typical winter, we see our fair share of snow and ice around here. When the roads are covered with snow or ice, it’s vital that you adjust your driving habits accordingly.

With that in mind, we thought it would be a good idea to share some tips that can help keep you safe on the roads this winter. Here are a few winter driving tips that can benefit new and seasoned motorists alike:

  • Stay home: If you don’t have to travel when the weather’s bad, don’t. Stay home and watch the snow accumulate outside instead.
  • Have your car serviced: The adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” certainly applies to winter driving. Rather than wait for something to go wrong with your vehicle when it’s cold outside, be proactive and have your automobile serviced before winter arrives to ensure it’s ready for the rigors the season normally brings with it. • Avoid parking on inclines: It can be difficult to get a car going from a dead stop on a hill even when the roads are clear. It’s even more challenging when the roads are covered with snow or ice so avoid parking or stopping on an incline whenever possible.
  • Increase your following distance: On dry pavement, your following distance should always be at least three to four seconds. If it snows or there’s ice on the road, it’s imperative to increase your following distance to a minimum of eight to 10 seconds to give you plenty of room to come to a stop without hitting the vehicle in front of you.
