Here at Auto Express Mazda, we talk a lot about the specific cars in our showroom, as well as all the new and exciting things coming from Mazda automakers. After all, when it comes to 2019 and 2020 Mazda vehicles, there’s plenty to talk about, but there are a lot of lesser-known facts about the Mazda company that you may find surprising. Today, we thought we’d have some fun and share three fun facts they might not know about the Mazda brand.

1. Cork and Machinery Origins

When Mazda was founded almost 100 years ago in 1920, it was known as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Corporation. At the time, it was known for making cork and machine tools. It wasn’t until the 1930s that the company began moving into automobiles, starting with three-wheeled trucks and other small vehicles.

2. Mazda Breaks Ground in the United States

Mazda didn’t arrive in the United States until 1970 when it opened its U.S. headquarters in Seattle, WA. Within 12 years, Mazda sold over a million passenger vehicles, and in 1985, it opened its first major U.S. plant in Michigan.

3. Mazda Gives Back

The Mazda company gives back through the Mazda Foundation, established in 1984. Its main programs include an after-school program that helps students give back to their communities, building homes for veterans of recent wars, and supporting a food bank that prevents childhood hunger.
